Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine Barville - Roussanne - white

THE WINE

Since 1931, five generations of the Brotte family have been carefully and lovingly crafting refined, elegantly fruity and spicy wines with a remarkably smooth character. Its in-depth knowledge of the Grenache varietal, the terroirs and the art of vinification and ageing, mainly in 100-year-old oak foudres, endow all the Brotte wines with their distinctive style.

Appearance – Bright, intense golden yellow hue.

Nose – Very complex and exuberant. In its early youth, the nose is fresh with notes of pears and white peaches. After two years of cellar-ageing, a smoky, spicy character and brioche aromas dominate the first nose which then goes on to develop exotic aromas of ripe mango, melon and a floral touch of jasmine.

Palate – When young, the wine is soft on entry and continues with a lovely balance between roundness and minerality set off by hints of pear and brioche. After two years of cellar-ageing, the palate acquires a great deal of breadth and complex aromas of exotic fruit, melon, acacia honey and vanilla with a slight salted butter caramel quality. This is a fine wine of exceptional length.

LOCATION, TERROIR & VINIFICATION

LOCATION

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located between Orange and Avignon. Domaine Barville Red comes from a 15-hectare vineyard.

TERROIR

Domaine Barville has about 15 hectares, made up of 7 plots located on two of the oldest and finest terroirs in the west of the AOC: red clay and pebbles in the “Pradel” lieu-dit and fragmented limestone in the “Beaurenard” lieu-dit.  The very hot climate and excellent exposure facilitate the ripening and concentration of the grapes.

VINIFICATION & AGEING

Each grape variety is picked separately by hand and transported quickly in small crates to prevent the grapes from crushing and oxidising.  We started handling the grapes even more carefully from the 2020 vintage. The wine is aged in French oak barrels (1/3 new, 1/3 used for one fill, 1/3 used for two fills) for the tannic Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache wines, while the softer Grenache wines are aged in concrete tanks and 100-year-old oak foudres to preserve the fruit. The wine is bottled in the March after over a year of ageing and a light filtration.
