Châteauneuf-du-Pape - Les Hauts de Barville - red

THE WINE

With many years of experience in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, Maison Brotte knows the local terroirs like the back of its hand.  Les Hauts de Barville wine boasts a distinctively smooth and supple character. It is a rustic Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a softer style that beautifully sets off the purity of the fruit and the primary aromas of the varietals that go into its blend.

Appearance – Dark ruby hue with slightly purplish tints.

Nose – Intense and fine. In its early youth, the nose is fresh with notes of red and black fruit and liquorice. After four to five years of cellar-ageing, cherry in brandy, strawberry jam, truffle and roasted notes are dominant on the first nose, which then goes on to develop aromas of liquorice, undergrowth, black olive and spices.

Palate – When young, the wine is fresh, concentrated and soft with hints of black cherries and garrigue scrubland. With age, the palate becomes very broad with a very long finish and is underpinned by aromas of black cherry jam, truffles, liquorice and undergrowth.

LOCATION, TERROIR & VINIFICATION

LOCATION

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located between Orange and Avignon. The grapes for Hauts de Barville red come from terroirs encompassing the four main Châteauneuf-du-Pape soils: pebbles, fragmented limestone, sand and safre.

TERROIR

Selected Syrah grapes beautifully complementing a majority Grenache blend, from the best-exposed terroirs of pebbles, limestone and sand, lend this wine a lovely concentration and a powerful yet fine tannic texture.

VINIFICATION & AGEING

The soils are ploughed during the year. Extensive green work is carried out to reduce yields and thereby improve the quality of the grapes. The grapes are harvested by hand, completely de-stemmed and crushed. This is followed by fermentation at a temperature of 28°C and then 3 to 4 weeks of maceration. The Syrah wines are aged in French oak barrels and the softer Grenache in 100-year-old foudres for a year to balance out aromatic richness and tannins. The wine is then bottled after a light filtration.
